The Sea Turtles of Bonaire
Three species of sea turtles live on Bonaire:
- The green turtle (Chelonia mydas): These large turtles often feed on grass. They live in shallow waters and graze on seagrass beds. Their graceful movements make them beautiful to watch.
- The Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata): These turtles have a beautiful shell. They often live near coral reefs and eat sponges. They help keep the coral reef healthy.
- The leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea): This is the largest of all sea turtles. They travel long distances and live in deeper waters. They contribute to the biodiversity of the ocean.
Threats and Protection
Sea turtles are struggling. Plastic pollution, habitat loss and climate change are major threats. Fortunately, Bonaire is doing a lot to protect them.
The Role of STCB
The organization STCB (Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire) protects sea turtles. They protect nests, do research and provide education. They also work together with local communities and tourists.
Visit the STCB page for more information about their work.
Other Protective Measures
There are more initiatives to protect sea turtles. Examples are campaigns to reduce plastic and stricter regulations. Together, these actions make a big difference.
How You Can Make a Difference
Visitors to Bonaire can help:
– Respect nature: Stay at a distance and do not touch the turtles. This prevents stress for the animals.
– Avoid plastic waste: Ensure that waste does not end up in the sea. Participate in beach clean-up campaigns.
